Abstract
Cod fishing off of Newfoundland played a vital role in the economies of France and Britain, the rival nations of the 18th Century. Thousands of men and whole communities depended on fishing and exporting salt and dried cod from the Newfoundland fisheries to Southern Europe, the Near East and the West Indies. In the age of Enlightenment, Encyclopédistes and Philosophes contrasted cod fishing — a lonely venture in northern climates, simultaneously virtuous and profitable — to the corrupt enterprises of settlers in the tropics ; the real treasures of the New World were the bounties of the sea. As L'Histoire des deux Indes claimed, a ship loaded with dried cod was as full of gold as a Spanish galleon.
