Abstract
ABSTRACTWhen a strong aberrated laser beam is focussed onto a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal, it produces, above the threshold, a molecular distortion, the profile of which depends upon the point spread function of the incident wave. The strong zero spatial frequency component creates a highly distorted center in the crystal and it diffracts strongly to produce a spherical reference wave which interferes with the directly transmitted aberrated wave. This interference phenomenon takes place in the extraordinary wave and shows the constant phase contours of the incident wavefront. The explanation based on the two beam interference effect is supported by experimental results.
