Abstract
Source d’angoisse existentielle, les événements de vie critiques, attribuables à des pertes ou à des transitions, suscitent des défis majeurs chez les personnes âgées. Cet article présente une lecture descriptive et interprétative des difficultés associées à ces épreuves, du travail de deuil qu’elles exigent et de la nécessité pour les personnes vieillissantes d’investir d’autres intérêts que ceux tournés vers l’actualisation ou le renforcement de l’Ego. Cette réflexion s’inspire des résultats d’une étude longitudinale sur le développement psychosocial des aînés et sur les observations tirées de notre expérience humaine, comme enseignant et chercheur en gérontologie.
