Le baobab (Adansonia digitata) revêt une grande importance pour les paysans maliens. Ses feuilles, riches en vitamine A, entrent dans la confection de sauces qui font partie de leur menu quotidien. Afin de réduire la pression que subit cet arbre en raison d’une cueillette intensive, des chercheurs de l’Icraf et de l’IER ont conçu une technique de culture du baobab en planche maraîchère. Bien que cette technique soit relativement récente, une étude de son potentiel d’adoption a été réalisée dans le Cercle de Ségou, au Mali, où elle a déjà fait l’objet d’activités de diffusion. Les résultats indiquent que la technique est à la portée des paysans sur le plan de sa faisabilité, malgré l’existence d’un certain nombre de contraintes. Celles-ci ont trait notamment à la disponibilité de la main-d’œuvre, de la terre et de l’eau, de même qu’au faible taux de germination des semences et à son étalement dans le temps. Par ailleurs, le caractère sacré de l’arbre et les nombreux interdits qui lui sont liés semblent ne pas nuire à l’acceptabilité de la technique. En revanche, le fait que la planche maraîchère de baobab permette à certains hommes d’investir le domaine féminin du maraîchage pourrait être source de conflits. L’incertitude qui subsiste sur sa rentabilité constitue également une importante contrainte à son adoption. Diverses modifications apportées à la technique par les paysans et certaines innovations ouvrent peut-être la voie à d’autres méthodes pour réaliser les objectifs qui lui sont dévolus.
