Abstract
Au cours de sa fructueuse carrière, l’artiste canadien d’origine hollandaise, Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872) a réalisé à des centaines de reprises des scènes de genre montrant l’habitant avec son cheval pendant l’hiver. En effet, le peintre et ses clients affectionnent les sujets qui montrent le paysan en compagnie du cheval et des différents types de voiture qu’il utilise. Son art valorise les qualités du cheval canadien, son endurance, sa vitesse, sa vigueur, son adresse et sa patience en le montrant dans différentes situations. Tantôt on le voit mener le paysan et sa famille, tantôt on le voit courir et galoper. Ces saynètes incluent l’inventaire des moyens de transport dont dispose les Canadiens. Traineau, traineau à bâtons, berline ou berlot et carriole se côtoient sur les routes enneigées et rivalisent avec l’élégant traineau de promenade ou sleigh . Sa peinture qui multiplie les répliques devient l’archétype des représentations d’habitants au XIX e siècle. La popularité de ses tableaux fera école et ils deviendront un demi-siècle plus tard le sujet à éliminer en vue d’imposer au Canada français un art débarrassé de stéréotypes et fidèle aux nouvelles réalités.
