Abstract
Comme dans les autres pays postindustrialisés, les données démographiques canadienne et québécoise font apparaître l’importance de plus en plus grandissante des femmes célibataires vivant en solo. Remettant en question un style de vie fondé sur le couple, la famille et la progéniture, elles font l’objet d ¹ une couverture médiatique tant dans le milieu francophone qu’anglophone. L’analyse des thèmes portant sur les célibataires dans les articles de journaux parus entre 2000 et 2007 met en relief plusieurs enjeux : la progression significative du célibat ; les contradictions dans le style de vie ; la quête du partenaire et les stratégies impliquées ; les préoccupations face à la maternité et à la reproduction ainsi que les contraintes biomédicales qui en découlent. Le traitement journalistique de ces thèmes montre une préférence pour la description des milieux sociaux favorisés, un biais hétérosexuel et le recours à des stratégies narratives multiples pour décrire une réalité aux facettes complexes.
