Les plantations de café mexicaines révèlent une grande variabilité de structure et de composition, allant d’un modèle de production complexe, traditionnel, à un modèle moderne et simplifié. Afin de comprendre l’impact des politiques d’intensification de la caféiculture sur cette variabilité, et en particulier sur la richesse en espèces végétales des plantations, une étude a été effectuée à San Miguel Tzinacapan, un village nahua de la Sierra Norte de Puebla. L’objectif était d’identifier, parmi une série de facteurs environnementaux et socio-économiques, ceux qui influencent le plus la richesse végétale de plantations familiales de moins de 1,5 ha. Un échantillonnage standardisé, une collecte de données environnementales et une enquête socioéconomique ont été réalisés. Les résultats semblent confirmer l’impact négatif de la modernisation des caféières sur la biodiversité végétale. Les facteurs les plus fortement liés à la richesse en plantes d’une hauteur de plus de 5 m sont, de façon positive, le degré de fermeture de la canopée et, de façon négative, la densité des plants de café. Pour les plantes d’une hauteur de 1,5 à 5 m, les principaux facteurs liés à leur richesse sont, de façon positive, le pourcentage de plants de café appartenant à la variété criollo, utilisée depuis les débuts de la caféiculture au Mexique, et, de façon négative, l’intensité de la force de travail salariée employée pour désherber les plantations. La biodiversité des caféières paraît, donc, menacée par les pratiques liées à l’intensification de la production.
