Abstract
The most distinguishing characteristic of the electoral and political systems traditionally and currently existing in the Americas is the separation of powers between the Congress and the Presidency. Nowadays, the only exceptions can be found in Canada and a number of small islands in the Caribbean which maintain the typically British-legated formula of parliamentary regime with a single parliamentary election in single-member districts by plurality rule.
