Abstract
En réaction à la crise économique des années 1930, des intellectuels canadiens militent activement pour l’établissement d’une société «meilleure». En janvier 1932 est créée une League for Social Reconstruction visant l’éradication des calamités du système capitaliste. En 1934, une seconde initiative réformiste s’incarne dans la Fellowship for a Christian Social Order. Si l’on n’a pas manqué de remarquer la proximité de ton et la parenté idéologique entre ces organisations, on ne les a jamais traitées de front. Cet article veut remédier à cette lacune. Grâce à l’analyse d’un thème récurrent, le covenant community, on s’aperçoit que ces efforts réformistes ne sont pas simplement complémentaires, mais qu’ils se sous-tendent les uns les autres parce qu’ils circonscrivent un même univers culturel de significations sociales.
