Bakgrunn: Nasjonale føringer beskriver behovet for fokus på symptomlindring hos pasienter i palliativ fase. Hensikten med denne studien var å kartlegge bruken av Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) blant sykepleiere som arbeider med pasienter i palliativ fase ved sykehjem.\nMetode: Et strukturert spørreskjema ble utarbeidet og sendt til 134 sykepleiere ved 18 sykehjemsavdelinger i 18 kommuner. To kommuner trakk seg fra undersøkelsen etter at spørreskjemaet var sendt ut. Deskriptiv statistikk ble anvendt for å analysere data.\nResultater: Spørreskjemaet ble besvart av 83 (62 prosent) sykepleiere ansatt ved 16 sykehjem med egne palliative enheter, eller ved avdelinger med senger forbeholdt pasienter i palliativ fase i Helseregion Sør-Øst. Det er hovedsakelig likhet i sykepleiernes bruk av ESAS ved de to avdelingstypene. Forskjellene gjelder planer for bruk av ESAS, hvor palliative enheter i større grad har skriftlige rutiner for bruk av ESAS, de ansatte har fått opplæring i bruk av ESAS, og de ansatte bruker ESAS i større grad. ESAS med det grafiske skjemaet som kartlegger symptomer over tid, er ikke i så stor grad benyttet som systematisk kartleggingsinstrument ved avdelingene med senger forbeholdt pasienter i palliative fase. Sykepleierne der rapporterer at deres pasienter er for dårlige til å kunne bruke ESAS systematisk.\nKonklusjon: Sykepleierne ved palliative enheter på sykehjem bruker ESAS med det grafiske skjemaet i større grad sammenlignet med sykepleiere ved avdelinger med senger forbeholdt pasienter i palliativ fase. Ved palliative enheter er det i større grad planer for bruk av ESAS, systematisk opplæring og rutiner, sammenlignet med sykehjemsavdelinger med senger forbeholdt pasienter i palliativ fase.
