Abstract
Au debut des annees 1980, MOBIL a decouvert un gisement petrolifere gigantesque dans 80 m d'eau sur les Grand Banks, sur la cote est du Canada, a 350 km au large de l'ile de Terre-Neuve. La difficulte majeure pour le developpement de ce champ de petrole residait dans le fait qu'il y regne des conditions d'environnement extremes, non seulement la houle qui est comparable aux conditions de la Mer du Nord (30 m de hauteur de vagues) mais surtout les icebergs qui derivent du nord-ouest du Groenland par le couloir du Labrador, et qui creent une menace pour toute forme d'exploitation petroliere a partir de plates-formes fixes ou flottantes. Fort de l'experience acquise avec les plates-formes gravitaires en beton installees en Mer du Nord au milieu des annees 1970, DORIS a imagine un nouveau concept de plate-forme en beton resistant aux icebergs de plus de 10 millions de tonnes de deplacement. L'ouvrage est stable sur le fond marin grâce a son propre poids
