Les romans de Kossi Efoui exploitent un ressort narratif qui passe souvent inaperçu, en raison des affinités anciennes que le récit entretient avec la relation des choses passées ou à venir : la capacité de susciter des personnages arrimés au moment présent par une idée fixe. Couper les personnages de leur héritage et de leurs potentialités permet de leur donner une énergie d’un type particulier, particulièrement adaptée à la résistance à certaines formes contemporaines d’oppression en contexte postcolonial. Le retour au présent devient une force politique libératrice qui ne saurait passer par des retrouvailles avec une réalité pleine et concrète, puisque celle-ci a été totalement circonscrite par des régimes grotesques, mais par le recours à l’abstraction d’une image fixe.
