Abstract
Cet article examine comment les missionnaires catholiques français collaborent politiquement à la gestion coloniale des affaires amérindiennes au Canada et en Acadie entre 1700 et 1770. Sous le Régime français, l’action diplomatique, militaire et religieuse des missionnaires leur confère un rôle d’intermédiaire clé entre les autorités coloniales et les populations autochtones. Le maintien de l’alliance franco-amérindienne et celui de la souveraineté territoriale française orientent leurs actions. En dépit des chambardements provoqués par la Conquête de 1760, certains missionnaires poursuivent leur collaboration politique avec l’administration coloniale dans les premières années du Régime britannique. Le recours à leurs services par les Britanniques montre qu’on reconnaît toujours en eux un atout pour gagner la faveur des Amérindiens.
