Abstract
The Treaty of Nice was negotiated by an Intergovernmental Conference (IGC), which ran through most of the year 2000. The European Council in Nice, France, concluded the negotiations in December 2000. An important part of the historical context was the expected eastern enlargement, which eventually had six central and eastern European countries (CEECs) joining the EU in 2004—namely, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia together with the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), as well as Malta and Cyprus. Bulgaria and Romania followed in 2007. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
