Abstract
The genus Cryptorhynchus Illiger 1807 is reviewed for the United States and Canada. Five species are recognized; C. fuscatus LeConte, C. helvus LeConte, C. obliquus Say, resurrected combination, C. lapathi (Linnaeus) and C. tristis LeConte. Sternochetus woodruffi Sleeper is a new junior synonym of C. helvus. Cryptorhynchus minutissimus LeConte is transferred provisionally to Acalles Schoenherr near Acalles sablensis Blatchley as Acalles minutissimus (LeConte), new combination. A neotype is designated for C. obliquus (Say). A key to the five species is presented along with brief diagnoses, and summaries of natural history and distribution. Cryptorhynchus is a large, cosmopolitan genus that over the years appears to have become a dumping ground for cryptorhynchine weevils of uncertain generic identity. Following earlier work by Kissinger (1964) on North American weevils, in which he removed a number of species from Cryptorhynchus, Anderson (2002) suggested that the genus was still composite and needed further study. Herein, the North American species are reassessed, some nomenclatural changes made, and a key is provided to the five now recognized Cryptorhynchus species in North America. No attempt was made to exhaustively examine specimens from many institutional collections across the United States and Canada. Only types and specimens housed in the Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa, Canada (CMNC) and the United States National Museum, Washington D.C. (USNM) have been examined. Types were examined from the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, Sweden (SMNH), Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University (MCZC), and the Florida State Collection of Arthropods in Gainesville, Florida (FSCA).
