Abstract
Solex Thermal Science, with its headquarters in Calgary, AB, Canada, designs and develops a plate type bulk solids heat exchanger, which is claimed to be much more compact and energy efficient than a fluidized bed or rotating drum heat exchanger of the same capacity. Through the vertically placed, hollow plates with a dimple pattern a thermal fluid, like for example water or thermal oil is pumped. Between the hollow plates just enough space is left for the solids to flow downward without problems. Currently only this bulk solids heat exchanger is designed at Solex; all the external systems to provide the unit with the thermal energy are not in Solex’ scope. Solex does provide the customers with a schematic diagram of how the connections should be made and how the control loops should look like, but there is a demand from customers to actually provide this whole secondary system as a module. In this report a design of this water temperature control module is presented. It is an evolution on modules that were in the production stage and on a document containing the general specification. To accurately quote for the water modules a system has been set up to provide the tools to easily and precisely give estimates on prices. Other than that a short overview is given on the other activities performed at Solex. To draw process and instrumentation diagrams faster, and to ensure a uniform style is used throughout the company, a system containing build blocks has been made. Using these elements making a new drawing is done without a hassle, since the start is already made. In the lab new products and setups were tested, easy to use calculation tools were made, and input is given on a biomass dryer project.
