Maintenant reconnues comme élément majeur du rayonnement culturel dans les municipalités, les bibliothèques publiques du Québec ne se limitent plus, en cette fin de vingtième siècle, à simplement prêter des livres. Dotées d’une mission sociale incontournable, elles offrent à leurs usagers des biens culturels multimédias, des services de haute technologie et une variété d’activités d’animation pouvant rejoindre tous les publics. Le présent article retrace les grandes étapes de l’ontogenèse de ce qui fut jadis un modeste comptoir de prêt. Une métamorphose ayant engendré, à certains endroits, des maisons de la culture, à d’autres, des médiathèques. Une reconversion qui rétablit le dynamisme d’une organisation professionnelle transformée grâce à un accord de partenariat entre les municipalités et l’État québécois. Le mode de fonctionnement de ces nouveaux temples du savoir de la société post-moderne y est décrit, notamment les aspects suivants : le financement, le cadre législatif, le traitement documentaire, le regroupement et les clientèles desservies.
