Abstract
‘Entry into Europe no longer interests me. I have no desire to be part of an entity which hates Israel and is anti-Semitic.’ This is how one of the most important Jewish personalities of the Czech Republic answered my greetings. It was the end of April 2004 and I had turned to him to congratulate him on his country’s then imminent entrance into the European Union. This highly cultivated man, committed to the strengthening of Czech democratic life, had nothing in common with the Eurosceptics close to President Vaclav Klaus. He belonged to the world of Vaclav Havel and had awaited the Brussels ‘consecration’ with great impatience. His instant negative reply, devoid of any nuance or appeal, thus rang all the more harshly in my ears. It invalidated everything towards which I, as a European Jew (but also he), had worked for: the creation of a positive Jewish presence inside a Europe that was finally reconciled with all of its pasts. Above all, his answer stood as a troubling warning to all of Europe, announcing, if not actually sealing, the return of an intrinsic incompatibility between ‘being Jewish’ and ‘being European’.
