Abstract
Near the beginning of this book, I alluded to Evel Knievel’s iconic 1974 attempt to clear Idaho’s Snake River Canyon on his Skycycle. I suggested that most attempts to traverse the gap between research and practice have been about as successful as Knievel’s jump – with the daredevil floating in the river at the bottom of the canyon wondering what went wrong. What I didn’t say at that point was that the Skycycle actually cleared the chasm but a mechanical malfunction – premature deployment of the parachute – blew Knievel and his cycle back into the canyon.
