Strains at Shallow Depth in Bound Surfacing Materials

Abstract
This paper presents the results of a study conducted in collaboration with the Quebec Ministry of Transportation on the effects of tire configuration and width on flexible pavements. In addition to horizontal strains at the bottom of the asphalt bound layer and vertical strains at the top of the subgrade, strains at a depth of 25 mm in the asphalt concrete were measured. The three main factors studied were the type of tire, the inflation pressure and the load applied on the tire. In an attempt to measure shear forces believed to be responsible for instability rutting in the asphalt concrete, strain measurements were made at a depth of 25 mm in the pavement using an array of optic fibre sensors placed along vertical (z), longitudinal (x) and transversal (y) directions. These measurements were made using a test plate specially designed for the study. The paper will described the test plate and will outline the research results. It has been found that the main experimental factors all have a significant impact on the shear strains measured at shallow depth in bound surfacing materials.
