Abstract
Abstract The increased diversity of families involved in family courts challenges court-based services to reevaluate how families are understood and how therapeutic and legal services can best function to collectively support the unique needs of diverse families. Cultural sensitivity is relevant to all mental health practitioners and legal professionals working in family courts, as it provides an overview of the various ways that cultural differences can influence complex decision-making processes when working with families from diverse backgrounds and heritages. Interparental conflict, co-parenting relationships, and psychosocial health of separating and divorcing families may vary across different cultures. Because of the cultural variability of children and parents’ experiences involved in custody disputes, cultural differences can dramatically increase the complexity of a child custody dispute.
