One Wench between Them: Thomas Heywood, Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The crudest and most repugnant way of showing allegiance to the double standard of sexual morality is to assume that women — and women only — deserve to die for sexual offences. This principle is never stated quite so nakedly, even in Jacobean drama where, in general, crude and repugnant positions are likely to have their adherents. But the assumption is a pervasive one nonetheless. Think of Othello, who repents of his violence to Desdemona only because he discovers that she was, after all, a faithful wife. Or think of Heywood’s great summation of the double standard in all its tearful agony: A Woman KiIled with Kindness (1603). The guilty wife is banished from her husband’s bed and board, denied any further contact with her children, and exiled to a country house where she has the sense to do the only decent thing: starve herself to death. The guilty lover is exiled too — but to Europe, where he intends to study the languages with a view to rehabilitating himself someday as a courtier. The message is inescapable: for the man, adultery is a fault that can be mended; for the woman the damage is permanent, the loss beyond repair.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
