Abstract
In March 1957, the narrator and his family travel by air to Montreal, and he renews his efforts of looking for a job to be able to support his family. He was offered an opportunity to join the new laboratory at Dow Chemical. In the 8 years he spent with Dow, he published some hundred scientific papers and also obtained some thirty patents on various topics of industrial interest. He was treated generously by Dow and was promoted rapidly to Research Scientist, and won the American Chemical Society Award in Petroleum Chemistry for his work on Friedel-Crafts chemistry. His work on long-lived (persistent) carbocations dates back to the late 1950s at Dow and resulted in the first direct observation of alkyl cations. He extended Friedel-Crafts complexes by using infrared radiation (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The field rapidly expanded and allowed successful study of practically any carbocationic system.
