Abstract
Shaw befriended many actresses throughout his career, and his letters and notes to them are often the only real glimpse we have into the lives and careers of these women who left no memoirs of their own. One such actress was Mary Hamilton, a Canadian who first created the role of Minnie Tinwell in the London premiere of The Doctor's Dilemma. Hamilton's father, an Anglican Archbishop, disapproved of his daughter's acting career, eventually insisting she return home to care for her ailing mother. In these previously unpublished letters from Shaw to Hamilton, the feminist playwright offers sympathetic but uncompromising advice to a woman struggling to balance the competing demands of a professional acting career with her duty to her family.
