Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines a number of strands of copyright scholarship and activism that originated in the United States. It first looks at “free culture” through the lens of a Canadian documentary, Brett Gaylor's RiP: A Remix Manifesto (2009). Second, it discusses a practical product of the free culture movement, the Creative Commons license. Third, it addresses Canadian debates over “appropriation art” in 2007–2008. It critiques the tendency of resistance to expansionist IP law to stay too closely within the terms of that very law, and to fail to engage the located nature of both IP and alternatives to it.
