English Passengers (2000) de Matthew Kneale, au titre curieusement notionnel, qui semble d’entrée figer le voyage, est au niveau diégétique le récit d’une expédition loufoque aux buts multiples et inévitablement incompatibles. Le roman, qui juxtapose deux histoires (distantes d’une trentaine d’années), entremêle singulièrement deux modes : le récit premier, comédie loufoque et parodique, ouvre sur l’histoire de l’extermination des Aborigènes — réalité peu à peu dévoilée par l’entremise de récits de quelques pages (proches par leur forme du journal de bord) assumés par une succession de narrateurs homodiégétiques qui forment un échantillonnage représentatif de la population tasmanienne de l’époque. Histoire à double fond, le roman reflète la duplicité du colonisateur. Toutefois, malgré la disparité tonale des histoires, le roman, hybride en apparence, multiplie les échos et fait progressivement sens. Les deux histoires se rejoignent d’ailleurs dans le dernier quart du roman par l’intermédiaire d’un personnage métis (l’un des rares survivants du massacre). Finalement, English Passengers fait le pari de l’hybridité et le gagne. Non seulement le roman divertit en détournant allègrement la forme et la philosophie du récit de voyage, mais il donne aussi à lire une histoire des Aborigènes, à qui il restitue la parole le temps d’un roman.
