Abstract
Let me open the historical inquiry on the paradigmatic meaning of the Jewish experience for an integrated European history by taking a somewhat indirect approach to the subject. The indirect approach relates to a more current view on the European project proper. It appears to be widely accepted that the European Union is smoothly continuing its predisposed way of accelerated integration. With common institutions, a unified currency, further enlargement into the realm of East-Central Europe, an anticipated constitution and even a joint foreign as well as a prospective security policy, Europe is becoming — as some would like to see it — a new and emerging superpower. Everything seems to be feasible, except the answering of one quite essential question: where are Europe’s borders? Who will ultimately belong to the European Union and who will not? Who will be further admitted and who will not? Will its boundaries be of an institutional, political, cultural or of a geographical nature? Is, or shall Europe be by and large a Christian commonwealth, although evidently and obviously fundamentally secularized?
