Abstract
This chapter explores the extent of changes in national sentiments in eight countries (Britain, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Hungary, Czech Republic, and the United States) between 1995 and 2003. It argues that the nation is the primary collective identity for legitimization and challenges the notion that the nation is necessary as the sole provider of collective identity. However, the chapter supports the view that there is a need for a minimum form of collective identity for the sustaining of demos. In other words, diminishing collective identities can be a problem for democracy because it is primarily based on the nation-state. In addition to nationalist sentiments, the chapter looks at another form of collective identity—patriotism—and shows that national sentiments have remained relatively unchanged over the past decade.
