Abstract
This chapter explores the development and transformative nature of wine tourism in a region through a case study of the Okanagan region of British Columbia within an international context. The chapter describes the value and development of wine tourism internationally, and reflects on this in the discussion of the regional case study that includes practitioners in the Okanagan wine tourism industry. Observation and comments resulting from the study articulate the nature of wine tourism to the development of the Okanagan tourism and community experience and its mountain and rural community tourism development. Key points of the chapter demonstrate that tourism and wine industries are compatible, as the lifestyle and aesthetics of wine culture are transferred into a unique rural ideal. However, rural areas with a traditional agricultural focus in mountainous regions may be dramatically affected by the advent of tourism, as visitors expect the provision and quality of certain amenities (e.g. food, beverage and shopping outlets). Also, the development of wine tourism has been a key aspect of this ideal, due to the unique landscapes, the varieties of grapes, and rich cultural heritage of the region.
