Abstract
In the waning years of the seventeenth century, England and Spain were poised to extend their claims into the Mississippi River valley. With the consent of the government, but largely on his own initiative, René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle descended from Canada in 1682 to claim the river and all its drainages for France. Two years later, colonists in tow, La Salle failed to reach the mouth of the river through the Gulf of Mexico, and was murdered by his own men in Texas in 1687. Not until 1699 was Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville permitted to spearhead occupation of lower Louisiana.
