Abstract
In the 1920s and 1930s, Jews from Central and Eastern Europe sought refuge in various countries such as France, Canada, Great Britain, and the United States. While Jews who immigrated to Great Britain or the western hemisphere escaped Adolf Hitler's cruelty, those who settled in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands found that their safety was only temporary. When Germany invaded those countries in May 1940, thousands fled to France without visas or permits of any kind. Because of their status as undocumented illegal aliens, combined with their poverty and unfamiliarity with the French people and language, the Jews suffered severe persecution in the country. This chapter looks at the plight of Jewish immigrants and political refugees in Belgium and Luxembourg prior to World War I, focusing on the experiences of Menahem Marienberg, Miriam Löwenwirth, Sigi Hart, Boris Carmeli, and Walter Marx.
