Abstract
In the second century CE; after three failed revolts against Rome, in 66–70, 115–17, and 132–35 CE , the Jews turned from political to religious aims, from suicidally militant messianism to pacifist resignation. If, as Josephus writes of the Great Revolt of 66–70, the Jews had “preferred to perish at one fell swoop than piecemeal” (AJ XX 11,1 [256]), after 135 CE survival within the “four cubits of the Law” ( Berakhot 8a) was their aim. Resistance to Roman rule was now sublimated into the cut and thrust of talmudic argument (cf. Megillah 15b, Kiddushin 30b). The tannaitic Midrash, Sifre on Deuteronomy 32:35 identifies the “craftsmen and smiths” exiled to Babylonia by Nebuchadnezzar (597 BCE) with gifted scholars engaged in “the warfare of Torah” (321).
