À en croire les acteurs du monde théâtral, la consécration artistique est l’apanage des plus talentueux, et les inégalités de position le fruit d’inégalités de talent. Mais la notion de « talent » fait ici illusion, naturalisant l’origine de ces inégalités. En portant le regard à la fois sur les propriétés sociales des comédiens consacrés et sur les dynamiques structurelles et interactionnelles qui se font jour au sein d’un groupe de jeunes comédiens promis à la consécration, et en armant ce regard d’une triple lunette sociologique ( capital , réseau , carrière ), il devient toutefois possible de voir ce qui, de manière extrêmement précoce, constitue , au double sens — dispositionnel et processuel — du mot, ce qu’on appelle « le talent ». Ainsi peut-on comprendre l’origine et les fondements proprement sociaux de l’inégalité parmi les hommes et femmes de théâtre.
