Abstract
El pasado 20 de noviembre, la Estacion Espacial Internacional (ISS) cumplio 15 anos. Un cohete ruso Proton puso en orbita en 1998 al modulo Zarya, el nucleo alrededor del que se construiria la ISS a lo largo de la siguiente decada. La ISS es un laboratorio cientifico de investigacion basica de 420 toneladas, del tamano de un campo de futbol, que orbita alrededor de la Tierra a una velocidad de unos 7,6 km/s y a una altura de unos 400 km. A bordo de este laboratorio, en el que participan las agencias espaciales de EE. UU., Canada, Europa, Rusia y Japon, se llevan a cabo investigaciones en biologia y biotecnologia, ciencias de la Tierra y del espacio, fisica y ciencia de los materiales, salud humana, y desarrollo de tecnologia. En marzo pasado se habian contabilizado 1.502 investigaciones a bordo de la estacion y generado 747 articulos cientificos, muchos de ellos publicados en revistas como Nature, PNAS y Physical Review Letters.
