Theaterkünstler wie Robert Lepage oder Denis Marleau zählen zu den renommiertesten Vertretern einer Theaterästhetik, die sich durch den produktiven und innovativen Umgang mit neuen Medien auf der Bühne auszeichnet. Das Buch vertritt die These, dass diese Medienästhetik des Québecer Theaters in einem engen Zusammenhang zum Produktionsort der Inszenierungen steht, dass sich also die kulturelle Hybridität der frankophonen kanadischen Provinz Québec auf formal-ästhetischer Ebene in der medialen Hybridität des Theaters spiegelt. In der Verschränkung medien- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen wird sowohl ein theaterwissenschaftlicher Intermedialitätsbegriff entworfen als auch gleichzeitig gezeigt, warum der Kulturraum Québec zu einem ästhetischen Laboratorium für eine Theaterkunst des 21. Jahrhunderts wird.
