Abstract
Male gender is associated with a higher morbidity and mortality in both children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease (CKD).1 Testosterone has been implicated in the difference of progression of CKD, by gender.2 Children with renal dysplasia often reach end-stage kidney disease during puberty.3,4 There is evidence for a significantly steeper deterioration of renal function during puberty, independent of changes in body composition.3 In adults, there is also evidence for gender disparity of progression of CKD,5 with a higher rate of end-stage kidney disease in men.
