Abstract
It is estimated that cancer will overtake cardiovascular disease as the number one cause of death in Canada [1], mainly due to a drop in cardiovascular mortality driven by the discovery and implementation of more effective primary and secondary preventative treatments. Fortunately, the mortality of prostate cancer is also falling, now representing the third highest cause of cancer deaths in men (surpassed by colorectal cancer) [2]. This is most likely due to greater efforts applied to early cancer detection, driven by the increasing use of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA); other contributions include better treatments and a better understanding of the benefits and timing of multimodal treatments.
