Abstract
On a généralement expliqué le processus de conversion des Hurons et des Iroquois par l’effet combiné de la dépendance économique et de l’offensive missionnaire. Bien que fondée, cette explication ne permet pas de rendre totalement compte d’un certain nombre de phénomènes tels la conversion précoce des plus démunis (captifs et réfugiés), l’intensité et le caractère théâtral de la pratique religieuse, l’intériorisation des modèles chrétiens de comportement et leur maintien après le départ des missionnaires et la disparition des pressions économiques visant la conversion. Les concepts de fonction de légitimation et de fonction de compensation empruntés à Max Weber et à Pierre Bourdieu de même que ceux de répression et surrépression de Herbert Marcuse permettent de pousser l’analyse.
