Abstract

Natural gas can be used directly as a transportation fuel; in addition, it can be converted to other transportation fuels. Direct use as a transportation fuel requires minor modifications to the spark ignition combustion engines currently used in motor vehicles. The extent to which either of these options is utilised depends on the economics relative to other sources of energy, the availability of natural gas infrastructure and questions of sustainability and emissions. This chapter provides an overview of natural gas usage directly as a transportation fuel and prospects for its continued use in the future.
