Bulk solids that can host molecules of another, the guest component, form a large class of responsive materials. These materials can display a dramatic change in their structure and properties in the presence of various guests and, for each particular guest, the change may be individual. Two criteria are essential in the selection and design of such materials. First, the presence of weaker interactions that make it possible to organize the host molecules in a variety of mutually convertible regular structures (supramolecular organization). Second, high affinity to form inclusion compounds that is driven by thermodynamic reasons (clathration ability). Host materials of this type interact with external environment chemically (on a supramolecular level; the chemical composition of host usually does not change) and may be utilized for the creation of new generations of functional and smart materials.
