Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are a class of industrial chemicals that are receiving renewed interest due to their abundance in the atmosphere and dioxin-like toxicity. Several recent measurements of their atmospheric burdens show that ΣPCN is 60-150 pg m -3 at urban locations and lower at rural and remote sites. Typically, ΣPCN is 20-50% of ΣPCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) and the toxicity contribution (measured as TCDD toxic equivalents, TEQs) is of a similar magnitude. Air parcel back trajectories show that elevated PCN burdens at remote arctic locations can be attributed to air masses that stem from land-based sources in the U.K. and Europe. The long-range atmospheric transport of PCNs is largely governed by particle-gas partitioning. The particle-associated fraction of PCNs is described using a simple model that utilizes the octanol-air partition coefficient (K OA ).
