Abstract
L’article examine l’influence de certaines idéologies, telles que diverses formes de nationalisme et le néo-libéralisme, sur le développement des bibliothèques publiques du Québec. En étudiant l’histoire de ces institutions, on constate que les tensions existantes entre ces idéologies au niveau social ont engendré diverses ambiguïtés relatives aux bibliothèques, notamment en ce qui concerne leur mission fondamentale, leur contrôle et leurs ressources financières. Les politiques culturelles du gouvernement provincial ont maintenu ces ambiguïtés et les bibliothèques sont maintenant confrontées à un vide juridique et à l’incertitude financière.
