Abstract
Teaching democratic citizens to have actively mindful engagements with others in the political realm potentially fosters students’ sense of agency to shape and hope for the future. Much of the literature on citizenship education lists values and actions consisting of should be projections considered necessary for democratic life; however, these calls for schools to inculcate characteristics deemed worthy of responsible or active citizenship often overlook the flaws of modern democratic systems, expecting schools to train or remediate students to fit into idealized visions of actual political life (Couture, 1997; Dean, 2009).
