Abstract
This chapter studies the second Anglo-Sikh War, which began with a rebellion shortly after Lord Hardinge handed the reins of his office to Lord Dalhousie. The rebellion was sparked after Dewan Mulraj was tasked by the British resident to pay 20 lacs of rupees, which Mulraj was unable to pay. Mulraj resigned as dewan, and he was soon indicted to become the leader of the disbanded soldiers of Multan. This rebellion soon led to a full-scale war, which began with the Battle of Chillianwala. This battle marked the worst defeat of the British since their occupation in India. Unfortunately for the Punjabis, the Battle of Gujarat permanently ended their resistance to the feringhees. On 29 March 1849, Dalip Singh stepped down from his father’s throne for good.
