Abstract

Formidable progress in the fi eld of recombinant gene expression has taken place since 2004, the date of publication of the previous edition of this book. In particular, the emergence of the "omics" technologies has revolutionized all areas of biology. In the industrial arena, Escherichia coli , Saccharomyces cerevisiae , and insect cells continue to be the dominant production platforms of recombinant proteins. However, in the last few years plants and animals have grown in importance as viable sources of more complex proteins.
