Abstract
On April 21, 2001, the front page of the Globe and Mail, a Canadian national daily newspaper, was dominated by a graphic color photograph of a young man with blood streaming down his face, held tightly between two police officers in full riot gear (figure I.1). The byline to the photo read: "A bloodied protester is arrested yesterday after about 5,000 demonstrators clashed with riot police and crashed through the three-meter high fence surrounding the site of the Third Summit of the Americas in Quebec." The image was one of a series depicting the mass mobilizations that took place in Quebec City from April 20 to 22, 2001, to protest the Free Trade Area of the Americas.
