Abstract
Exposition shows a central “reverence” and appropriate “duty” for the basic presuppositional (“religious”) values which inform empiricistic education. After Newton, study of phenomena would directly reveal essentials. Empiricists rejected purposefulness in physics and, later, human life in the cosmos. With transcendental purposes abandoned, education took immediate, present-day society as its aim. Newton, Locke, Herbert Spencer, utilitarianism, the early-twentieth-century efficiency movement, behaviorist psychology, and rationalistic curriculum planning are well explained by the core “reverence” for direct (positivistic) perception of reality.
