Abstract
This chapter highlights several interviews conducted with prominent members of the Methyl Bromide Technical Options Committee (MBTOC) of the Montreal Protocol. A rift developed between pro-MeBr MBTOC members, who expressed support for private economic interests, and anti-MeBr MBTOC members, who supported the global scientific community and expressed concerns for public health and the global environment. The interviews suggest that while scientists often comprise a part of civil society, there are evident differences in scientific understanding about the efficacy of MeBr alternatives that are reflective of geopolitical competition and U.S. attempts to maintain a hold on scientific knowledge claims. The protection of the U.S. strawberry industry illustrates how U.S. science is used to defend U.S. interests and how the protection of U.S. strawberries is really about defending U.S. science.
