Le « chaos » ou le désordre des familles contemporaines n’est pas le reflet d’une absence de régulation, contrairement à une vision trop influencée par une grille démographique où seules l’instabilité et la désinstitutionnalisation sont mesurées. Il est engendré par les effets d’une logique sociale qui place le sentiment affectif au coeur du dispositif domestique. La force des exigences de l’amour n’est pas irrationnelle du point de vue des acteurs, au moins des adultes. Pour la construction de leur identité sociale, ces derniers doivent faire la preuve qu’ils sont des individus autonomes et capables néanmoins de nouer des liens « authentiques » et « désintéressés » : la vie privée sert de test social pour détecter cette compétence exigée.
