The second study is an investigation of the relationships of three subspecies of water shrews of Sorex palustris from British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.One of these subspecies, S. p. brooksi has been provincial Red Book listed and is restricted to Vancouver Island.I have compared it to mainland populations, to better understand how unique S. p. brooksi is from mainland taxa.Results for this study are presented in Chapter III.Conducting these kinds of studies involves the cooperation and collaboration of several people.I personally collected two specimens ofN.crawfordi and none of the specimens of S. palustris.The experimental design gave me a clear and focused role in these studies.I generated all of the molecular data and did the phylogenetic analyses
